Finances -
when living with Aging Parents

The first step to managing the finances is to take stock of everything your parent has in terms of bills, income and assets. Make sure you have all the records in order. Often older people will hide policies away, so look through files and drawers carefully before throwing anything away.

Next, identify the assistance that is available in your state. Some home services are paid for by the state. Florida, for example, has a program called Community Care for the Elderly and another called the Senior Resource Alliance.

Area Agencies on Aging can direct senior homeowners to programs that may be available in their area to fund or make home modifications. To find your local Area Agency on Aging, call 800-677-1116 or visit their website at www.n4a.org.

Check on Meals on Wheels to help reduce your food costs. Check in with your local senior center for assistance programs. They are a great resource. Even services such as low-cost rides can help save you money.

There may be waiting lists for services, so sign up as soon as possible.
