Exercise and Activities - spanning the generations |
Staying active is important for the physical and mental well being of your aging parent. Activities that include the whole family can help everyone feel more connected. A planned activity gives people something to look forward to and can even create traditions for the next generation to carry on. Make sure to get the go-ahead from your parent's doctor for physical actvities.
Even day-to-day drudgery can be turned into opportunities to work and play together. A trip to the grocery store can give your parent a chance to get out, exercise a little and be useful. You can break the grocery list into groups and split up, or have your parent drive the cart while you fill it. Walking around the grocery store is good exercise. Do some meal planning together so that your parent feels included and useful. Have them pick out the foods that they want to keep in their personal area for snacks and small meals that they will prepare for themselves. Turn meal prep into a group activity with everyone assigned activities that coincide with their skill ability.
Games such as the sports program on the wii game system can be played by people of all ages. Since it is based on sports like tennis, golf and bowling, aging parents will understand the rules of the game and how to play. The younger generation can stand and take full swings and be more active and the older generation can participate from a seated position. Just make sure everyone uses the wrist straps so the remotes don't fly across the room in the heat of play. Board games can also be enjoyed by everyone together. You may choose to pick one night a week or a month for family game night. Make the time special with treats. Puzzles are also good to work on together.
Walks around the neighborhood are a good way for everyone to get fresh air and exercise. Little kids can ride bikes and less mobile older adults can ride a scooter - little kids may be thrilled to catch a ride on the scooter as well. Bring the dog along only if the leash will not trip anyone up.
Another amazing way for your parent to get exercise is by rocking. It is a very easy and almost imperceptible way of getting exercise, but it works. Instead of watching tv in a stationary chair, have your parent sit in a rocking chair and rock. Amazing that the little extra effort actually pays off. Check in with your local senior center for senior exercise programs that your parent can attend. You may even choose to join in or at least spend a little time exercising at the same time. |
